JESSIE SWALLOWED AS Henry stepped back. At first, she thought he was going to take over, or worse, leave her alone to handle it.

But he did neither. He simply gave her the space to face off against this identical woman. Stayed close, right next to her really, but made it clear she...was in charge for the time being.

He hadn’t just told her to stay. He’d said please.

But that was not what was important right now. Getting to the bottom of her mysterious twin was.

“Who are you and why do we look so much alike?”

Quinn shrugged. “We’ve got the same parents.”

“We’re twins?”

“I mean, I assume. It’s not like I remember you when we were fetuses. I didn’t exactly know I had an identical twin out there looking just like me.”

“The word exactly makes me think you had more of an idea than Jessie did.”

Quinn flicked a glance at Henry and considered. “Yeah, looks like. I always knew I had a sister, and that my mom had decided to take her when she left.”

Left. But that wasn’t right. “My mother died in childbirth.”

Quinn seemed unfazed by that. “Not the story I got.”

“But it makes more sense. That she would have died, complications to having twins, than that she just took one of us.”

“Maybe she could only get away with one of us.”

That had an uncomfortable pit of...sadness...grow in Jessie’s gut. She couldn’t imagine having to leave a daughter behind, but she also knew how desperate she had once been to escape that compound. A compound... Quinn should have been at. “But I lived at my father’s compound for over five years. I never saw you. No one ever mentioned you.”

“Yeah, for a reason. Obviously.”

“How is any of this obvious?”

“I really don’t get how you could have been a part of it for five years and not picked up on any of it, but okay, let’s lay it all on the table here. You don’t know about the person who looks just like you? It’s because one of you is meant to replace the other.”

“Explain,” Henry ordered, in that voice that likely would have prompted her to fall all over herself to explain if he’d been talking to her.

But he wasn’t, so she could probably stop fluttering over that dark, intimidating way he’d said that one word.

“Look, I’m not a part of it,” Quinn said, spreading her hands wide. “Whatever dear old Dad’s got going on is always his business. I’m a pawn. You’re probably a pawn. I don’t know for what. Gold, sure, but there’s more now that Rob’s dead. Dad knows I’m a bit of a flight risk, and not totally on his side, my bad, but I’m willing to wager he thinks the kid knows something.”

Jessie’s entire body went cold. “Knows something?”

“About the gold. Again, obviously.”

None of this seemed obvious to Jessie, and the idea Sarabeth was on her father’s radar was...beyond terrifying. The cold froze her. She had no words. No thoughts. Just fear.

And then she felt a hand on her back.
